You Don’t Need to Post Every Day

There’s a persistent idea in social media marketing that if your business isn’t posting every day, you’re falling behind.

For most small businesses, that’s the wrong goal.

Posting seven times a week sounds productive. But if five of those posts exist simply because something had to go out today, are they actually helping your business?

Consistency and frequency are not the same thing

A business publishing two thoughtful posts every week for a year is consistent.

A business posting daily for three weeks, running out of ideas and disappearing for two months isn’t.

Your ideal schedule is one you can realistically maintain without sacrificing quality. For some businesses that might be three times a week. For others, once a week may be enough.

Give every post a reason to exist

Before publishing something, ask a simple question:

Why would my audience care about this?

Good social content might answer a common customer question, explain something confusing, demonstrate your work, share an interesting perspective or help someone solve a small problem.

“We haven’t posted since Tuesday” isn’t a reason to create content.

This is also where your blog can do some heavy lifting. A useful article can become several social posts, an email newsletter, a short video and even a discussion topic. If you’re handling your own marketing, this kind of repurposing can make the workload much more manageable. It ties naturally into our earlier article, DIY Marketing: What You Can Realistically Do Yourself.

Make fewer posts work harder

Instead of worrying about filling seven calendar slots, spend that time improving the posts you actually publish.

Write a stronger opening. Use a better image. Explain the idea properly. Respond to comments. Reuse good topics in different formats.

And most importantly, pay attention to what your audience responds to.

Social media shouldn’t become a daily attendance exercise.

Post when you have something worth saying. Show up consistently enough that people remember you. Then spend the rest of your time running your business.
