What Marketing Should You Do First With a $500 Budget?

You have $500 to spend on marketing this month.

Google Ads? Facebook? A new website? SEO? Flyers? Email marketing?

The easiest way to waste that $500 is to divide it between everything.

Instead, start here.

1. Spend $0 figuring out what you’re trying to achieve

Before spending anything, choose one objective.

For example:

  • Get 10 quote requests
  • Generate 20 calls
  • Bring more people into your store
  • Get your first 100 email subscribers
  • Sell a specific product or service

“Get more awareness” is usually too vague for a $500 budget.

2. Fix the destination first

If you’re sending people to your website, make sure it’s ready.

Can someone immediately understand what you offer? Is your phone number easy to find? Is there a clear form or call-to-action?

You don’t necessarily need a website redesign. Fix the obvious problems first.

This is where Pretty Websites Don’t Necessarily Generate Leads is worth reading. A website’s job isn’t simply to look good. It needs to help visitors take the next step.

3. Put most of the $500 into ONE channel

Don’t put $100 into five different things.

Choose the channel that makes sense for how customers find businesses like yours.

  • If people actively search for your service, Google Ads might deserve most of the budget.
  • If you sell something highly visual or discoverable, Meta may make more sense.
  • If you already have customers, email could cost very little and be worth testing first.

4. Keep some money for testing

Don’t commit the entire $500 on day one.

For example, you might start with $15 a day for 20 days = $300, then use what you learn before deciding how to spend the remaining $200.

The exact split isn’t important. Learning before spending everything is.

5. Measure business results

Clicks and impressions are useful, but they aren’t the goal.

Track what actually matters:

Calls. Forms. Bookings. Sales. Revenue.

At the end of the month, ask one simple question:

What did my $500 actually produce?

Your first small marketing budget doesn’t need to do everything.

It needs to teach you what deserves the next $500.
