Google Ads vs Meta Ads article

If you have a limited advertising budget, one of the first questions you may ask is: Should I spend it on Google Ads or Meta Ads?

The answer depends less on which platform is “better” and more on how your customers discover and make decisions about your product or service.

1. Google Ads captures existing demand

Google Ads is often strongest when people are already looking for what you sell.

For example:

  • “Emergency plumber near me”
  • “Best accountant for small business”
  • “Buy running shoes online”
  • “Roof repair Edmonton”

These searches can indicate strong buying intent because the customer is actively looking for a solution.

Best for: Capturing people who are already searching for a product or service.

2. Meta Ads creates demand

Facebook and Instagram work differently. Instead of waiting for someone to search, your ad appears while they are browsing content.

This can be particularly useful for:

  • Introducing a new product
  • Building awareness
  • Promoting visually appealing products
  • Reaching specific audiences
  • Retargeting people who have already interacted with your business

Best for: Creating awareness and generating interest among potential customers.

3. Consider your sales cycle

Think about how customers normally find you.

If someone searches for your service when they need it, Google Ads may make more sense.

If customers need to discover, compare or become interested in your product before buying, Meta Ads may be more effective.

4. Your creative matters

Google Search Ads rely heavily on keywords, offers and messaging.

Meta Ads give you more room to use:

  • Images
  • Videos
  • Carousels
  • Testimonials
  • Offers
  • Demonstrations

If you have strong visual content, Meta can give you more opportunities to showcase it.

5. You don’t always have to choose one

For some businesses, the strongest approach is using both platforms for different jobs.

Meta can create awareness and interest. Google can capture people actively searching for a solution.

The important thing is to measure the results from each channel rather than judging success by clicks or impressions alone.

And before launching Google Ads, make sure the fundamentals are ready. See what to do before spending money on Google Ads.
