The 5 Marketing Numbers I'd Track If I Could Track Nothing Else

There is no shortage of marketing data.

Website visits. Impressions. Likes. Clicks. Followers. Cost per click. Engagement rates.

The problem is that more data does not necessarily mean better decisions.

If I were running a small business and could track only five marketing numbers, these are the ones I’d want on my dashboard.

1. Qualified Leads

Forget how many people visited your website. How many potential customers actually raised their hand?

Track inquiries, quote requests, demo requests, calls or other actions that indicate genuine interest.

2. Conversion Rate

How good is your marketing at turning visitors into leads?

If 1,000 people visit your website and 30 become leads, your conversion rate is 3%.

This number helps you determine whether the problem is getting people to your website or convincing them to take action once they’re there.

3. Cost Per Lead

If you’re spending money to generate leads, you need to know what each lead is costing you.

For example, spending $1,000 to generate 20 qualified leads means your cost per lead is $50.

This becomes particularly useful when comparing different campaigns and channels. Google Ads and Meta Ads can serve very different purposes, so looking beyond clicks and comparing the actual cost and quality of leads can help you decide where your budget belongs.

4. Customer Acquisition Cost

A lead isn’t the end goal. A customer is.

Customer acquisition cost, or CAC, tells you how much you’re spending to acquire an actual customer.

If you spend $2,000 on marketing and sales to generate 10 new customers, your CAC is $200.

5. Revenue Generated

This is the number that ultimately puts the rest into perspective.

If one campaign generates 100 leads but only $2,000 in revenue, while another generates 20 leads and $10,000 in revenue, which one would you rather have?

Probably the second one.

That is why marketing should not be judged purely by traffic, clicks or engagement.

The best metrics help answer three simple questions:

Are we attracting the right people? Are they taking action? Is that activity generating business?

You don’t need a dashboard with 50 metrics to understand whether your marketing is working. You need the right numbers connected to actual business outcomes.

And if you’re not tracking these numbers yet, that’s a much better place to start than adding another social media follower to your report.
