Which Marketing Channel Should You Fix First?

When marketing results slow down, the instinct is often to change something immediately.

Pause Google Ads. Post more on social. Rewrite the website. Start SEO. Launch email.

The problem is that the channel getting blamed may not actually be the problem.

Start with the funnel, not the channel

Before changing anything, map the basic customer journey:

Traffic → Website → Enquiry → Follow-Up → Sale

Then ask where the drop-off is happening.

If you’re getting almost no traffic, you likely have an acquisition problem.

If traffic is healthy but enquiries are weak, the issue may be the website, offer, landing page, or contact process.

If leads are coming in but few become customers, changing your ad campaigns may do very little. The real problem could be lead quality, response time, or sales follow-up.

This is why looking at individual channels in isolation can lead to expensive decisions.

Check whether the channel is doing its actual job

Different channels have different roles.

SEO may introduce someone to your business.

Social media might build familiarity.

Google Ads may capture high-intent demand.

Email could bring someone back later.

Your website then has to turn that interest into action.

That means the channel that generated the final lead isn’t necessarily the only channel that contributed.

If your website is getting traffic but isn’t converting, revisit Pretty Websites Don’t Necessarily Generate Leads before increasing traffic further.

Fix the biggest bottleneck first

You don’t need to optimize every marketing channel at once.

Find the point where the largest number of potential customers are being lost.

For example:

Low traffic? Improve acquisition.

Traffic but few leads? Improve conversion.

Leads but poor quality? Review targeting and messaging.

Good leads but few sales? Look at follow-up.

If you’re unsure what happens after someone submits a form, Someone Filled Out Your Contact Form. Now What? is a useful place to start.

The best marketing improvement isn’t always the newest campaign or channel.

Sometimes the fastest way to improve results is simply to fix the weakest part of the funnel you already have.
