Google Ads conversion tracking

You open Google Ads and see 20 conversions. Then you check your CRM and find only 11 actual leads.

Which number should you believe?

Before deciding whether your campaign is working, you need to understand what Google Ads is actually counting as a conversion.

One lead could be counted more than once

One common problem is duplicate tracking.

For example, your website might track a successful form submission directly through Google Ads while the same event is also recorded in GA4 and imported back into Google Ads.

If both actions are included as Primary conversions, your reporting can become inflated.

Go into Goals → Conversions and review every conversion action. Ask yourself: What real-world action does this number represent?

Not every conversion is a lead

A phone-number click, email click, form submission, download, button click, and booked appointment can all be configured as conversions.

That doesn’t mean they should all carry the same weight.

For a lead-generation campaign, actual enquiries might be Primary conversions, while smaller engagement actions can remain Secondary. You can still measure them without allowing them to distort your main lead number.

Be careful with thank-you page tracking

Another common setup triggers a conversion whenever someone reaches /thank-you/.

Simple? Yes. Foolproof? Not necessarily.

Someone could refresh the page, bookmark it, revisit it, or reach it through another route. Depending on your tracking configuration, that can create conversion data that doesn’t correspond neatly to new leads.

Where possible, track the successful submission event itself and test the complete journey.

Follow conversions beyond Google Ads

Don’t stop your analysis at:

Ad click → Conversion

Follow it further:

Ad click → Form submission → CRM lead → Qualified lead → Customer

UTMs can also help preserve acquisition information as visitors move through this journey. If you’re unfamiliar with them, see how to use UTMs to track leads.

If Google Ads says 20 conversions but your CRM says 11 leads, don’t immediately change your keywords, ads, or budget.

Fix the measurement discrepancy first.

Google’s automated bidding decisions are only as useful as the conversion signals you give it.
