Digital advertising expert focused on Google Ads, Meta Ads and campaign settings while business results such as revenue, customers, leads and ROI are measured separately.

You Know the Platform. Do You Know the Business?

You know every Google Ads bidding strategy.

You can explain Performance Max asset groups in your sleep. And you have strong opinions about match types, attribution windows, campaign structures and approximately 147 settings most business owners have never heard of.

Someone configured a campaign differently from you?

Adorable. Clearly they have much to learn.

Just one irritating little question:

Did the advertising make the business any money?

Somewhere along the way, digital marketing developed a peculiar kind of expertise that mistakes knowing the advertising platform for knowing marketing.

The platform is the tool.

The business outcome is the job.

1. Platform knowledge isn’t business knowledge

Knowing every feature in Google Ads or Meta Ads is valuable.

But can you explain the client’s margins? Sales cycle? Customer lifetime value? Close rate? Capacity? Most profitable products?

A campaign generating 100 leads isn’t necessarily successful if Sales considers 90 of them useless.

Knowing how the machine works doesn’t automatically mean you know what the machine should accomplish.

2. Technical perfection can still produce useless marketing

The tracking is immaculate.

Campaign structure? Beautiful.

Naming conventions? A work of art.

The client isn’t making money.

But please, tell us more about the naming convention.

Marketing isn’t an engineering competition where the most technically elegant account wins.

Sometimes an imperfect campaign generating profitable customers is considerably more valuable than your technically magnificent masterpiece generating dashboard screenshots.

3. Complexity isn’t sophistication

There is a strange temptation in marketing to make simple things sound complicated.

Perhaps because “we need better leads” doesn’t demonstrate quite enough erudition.

So we add terminology, acronyms, frameworks and increasingly microscopic arguments about platform mechanics.

Technical depth matters when it improves decisions.

Complexity for the sake of demonstrating expertise is just intellectual decoration.

4. Condescension isn’t expertise

Knowing something another marketer doesn’t know doesn’t make them incompetent.

It means you know something they don’t.

Congratulations.

Someone else probably understands sales, finance, creative, analytics, customer behaviour or the client’s industry better than you do.

Actual expertise should make you better at explaining complicated things, not more enthusiastic about making other people feel stupid.

5. Accountability doesn’t end at the conversion

The platform reports 73 conversions at a wonderful cost per acquisition.

Everyone celebrates.

Then somebody asks how many became qualified opportunities.

Suddenly the meeting gets less festive.

Clicks, conversions and CPL matter, but they are steps toward a business outcome.

That’s why obsessing over cheap conversions without understanding quality is dangerous. As I discussed in Are Your Cheap Leads Actually Good Leads?, the cheapest lead isn’t necessarily the most valuable one.

The takeaway

Know the platforms.

Know them extremely well.

Understand bidding, tracking, audiences, attribution, automation and all the technical details that make campaigns work.

Then remember why any of it exists.

If you can explain every checkbox in Google Ads but can’t explain how the campaign contributes to revenue, you don’t have a knowledge advantage.

You have a very specialized hobby.

The client didn’t hire you to demonstrate how much you know about an advertising platform.

They hired you because they have a business problem.

Your expertise matters when you can connect the two.
