Google Ads can put your business in front of potential customers quickly. But launching a campaign before the basics are ready can turn your advertising budget into expensive traffic that never converts.
Before spending your first dollar, make sure these five things are in place.
1. Define your goal and audience
Know exactly what you want Google Ads to accomplish.
- More website traffic?
- Phone calls?
- Form submissions?
- Online purchases?
- Qualified leads?
Then define who you want to reach. The more clearly you understand your ideal customer, the easier it is to build relevant ads and choose the right keywords.
2. Have a strong offer and landing page
Getting someone to click your ad is only half the job. Your landing page needs to convince them to take the next step.
Check that your page:
- Clearly explains what you offer
- Matches the message in your ad
- Has a strong and obvious call to action
- Loads quickly
- Works well on mobile
- Makes it easy to contact or buy from you
3. Do your keyword research
Do not simply choose keywords because they have high search volume.
Look for keywords that indicate intent. Someone searching for “emergency plumber near me” is much closer to hiring someone than a person searching for “how to fix a leaking pipe.”
Consider:
- What your customers actually search for
- Whether they are ready to buy or simply looking for information
- Competition
- Cost per click
- Whether the keyword can realistically lead to a conversion
4. Set up conversion tracking
Before launching, decide what counts as a successful result.
Set up tracking for actions such as:
- Form submissions
- Phone calls
- Purchases
- Quote requests
- Key page visits
Without conversion tracking, you may know how many people clicked your ads but not whether those clicks generated business.
5. Set a realistic budget and test
Do not expect your first campaign to be perfect.
Start with a controlled budget that gives you enough data to learn. Test different keywords, ads and audiences, then use the results to improve the campaign.
The goal is not to spend more. It is to spend smarter.
A little preparation before launching Google Ads can save significant money later and give you a much better chance of turning clicks into customers.
