A low cost per lead can make a campaign look successful. But if those leads never become qualified opportunities or customers, cheap leads aren’t actually cheap.
Imagine two campaigns:
Campaign A: $35 per lead
Campaign B: $80 per lead
At first glance, Campaign A wins.
But suppose 1 in 20 leads from Campaign A becomes a qualified opportunity, while 1 in 4 from Campaign B does. Suddenly, the campaign with the higher CPL may be producing substantially better business results.
CPL only measures one part of the funnel
Cost per lead tells you how efficiently you’re generating leads. It doesn’t tell you whether you’re generating the right leads.
That’s why I wouldn’t evaluate a lead-generation campaign using CPL alone.
Look further down the funnel:
Ad → Lead → Qualified Lead → Opportunity → Customer
If you’re currently focused mainly on clicks and conversions, start with the five marketing numbers I’d track if I could track nothing else.
Add lead quality to your reporting
You don’t need a complicated attribution system to get started.
In your CRM, give leads a simple status such as:
Unqualified → Qualified → Opportunity → Customer
Then retain the original marketing source alongside that status.
After a few weeks, instead of reporting > Google Ads generated 40 leads at $42 each.
you can report > Google Ads generated 40 leads. Twelve became qualified opportunities.
That’s a much more useful conversation.
Find out which campaigns produce better leads
Don’t stop at channel level either.
One Google Ads campaign might generate lots of inexpensive form submissions while another generates fewer but substantially stronger prospects.
UTMs can help preserve the campaign information when leads enter your CRM. Here’s a practical guide to using UTMs to track leads.
Eventually, you can calculate metrics such as cost per qualified lead rather than relying entirely on cost per lead.
A rising CPL isn’t automatically bad. A falling CPL isn’t automatically good.
The goal isn’t to generate the cheapest leads. It’s to generate leads that have a realistic chance of becoming customers.
