Getting clicks on your Google Ads feels good.
Google shows you a nice little number going up. Maybe your click-through rate looks impressive too. You might even get a congratulatory notification telling you that your campaign is performing well.
Great.
Now, where are the customers?
If your Google Ads are generating clicks but very few leads or sales, the problem usually isn’t the number of people clicking. It’s what happens after the click.
Here are 5 places to look.
1. Your keyword is attracting the wrong people
Someone searching for “free accounting software” is probably not looking to hire an accountant.
Someone searching for “accountant for small business Edmonton” has a very different intent.
More clicks aren’t necessarily better. Relevant clicks are better.
Look at the actual search terms triggering your ads. You may discover you’re paying for plenty of visitors who were never going to become customers.
2. Your ad promises something your page doesn’t deliver
Your ad says “Free Consultation.”
The landing page says “Welcome to Our Company.”
That’s a problem.
The visitor clicked because they expected something specific. Make sure the landing page immediately delivers on that expectation.
3. Your landing page gives people too many choices
If someone arrives looking for one specific service, don’t send them on a sightseeing tour of your entire website.
One page. One clear offer. One primary action.
And please don’t make the visitor hunt for your phone number like it’s a treasure hunt.
4. You’re tracking clicks, not conversions
This is where things get interesting.
If you aren’t properly tracking form submissions, calls, bookings or purchases, you can’t really tell whether your ads are working.
You’re essentially judging a salesperson by how many people they shake hands with.
You need to know what happens after the click.
5. Your leads aren’t being followed up
You can have a great campaign, a great landing page and excellent conversion tracking.
Then someone fills out your form and nobody responds until Tuesday.
Congratulations. You just paid Google to find someone for your competitor.
Your ad campaign doesn’t end when someone becomes a lead. That’s when the next part of the funnel begins.

The takeaway
Don’t optimize Google Ads simply to get more clicks.
Optimize the whole journey from search to customer.
Because 500 clicks and zero customers isn’t a marketing success story. It’s an expensive traffic report.
